Position summary:  
The Director, Information Technology (IT) is responsible for overseeing the daily IT operations of the organization.  Working collaboratively with the Chief Technology Officer, the person in this position directs the development, implementation, and use of technology throughout the organization, working closely with staff to understand user and departmental needs. This role involves developing and deploying a strategic, comprehensive enterprise cybersecurity program. Responsibilities encompass the full range of information systems and telecommunications activities, including determining user requirements, managing organizational risks, recommending practical solutions, and leading continual efforts to improve the effective use of technology. The Director reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Service Desk System Administrator to:
    • Support multiple office locations, including remote staff and those who telework.
    • Provide expertise and support during systems upgrades, installations, and maintenance.
    • Oversee systems development and enhancement.
    • Develop standard operating procedures and best practices, including providing written protocols and guidance to end-users.
  • Provide guidance to the Applications Project Manager on application development, deployment, customization, enhancements, and maintenance.
  • Direct American Humane’s data and cybersecurity protection and oversee technology governance and policies.
  • Provide strategic risk guidance for IT projects, including recommendations of technical solutions.
  • Assist staff with IT-related support problems.
  • Following organizational policies and procedures, evaluate, test, and recommend IT services and resources.
  • Manage vendor relationships and communicate with vendors to resolve IT support issues.
  • Monitor internal and hosted IT systems and services for availability and proper operation and manage support requests.
  • Oversee and monitor endpoint, network, and cybersecurity services in collaboration with IT management and managed services providers.
  • Assist with creating, implementing, and enforcing endpoint, network, and application security policies and procedures.
  • Monitor IT compliance requirements related to HIPAA, PCI, and other standards.
  • Assist with the creation, implementation, and testing of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans.

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience is required
  • 5 or more years of experience working in Information Technology with management responsibility overseeing at least two of the following IT functions: Network Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Cloud computing, Software Development, or IT Operations.  
  • Experience managing direct report(s) in an IT function strongly desired.
  • Firm grasp of IT concepts and principles, including but not limited to desktop and server operating systems, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, network components and infrastructure, VOIP technology and services, and network and infrastructure security.
  • Ability to follow-up and meet deadlines, conduct and direct research into IT issues and products, and take initiative in the development and completion of projects.
  • Ability to manage vendor relationships and coordinate vendor services and projects to enhance IT system stability and availability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain IT technology and concepts in easy-to-understand terms to the average person.
  • Self-disciplined, action-oriented style with a strong work ethic and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; high detail orientation.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information and make recommendations or decisions in a timely manner.
  • Willingness to persist with a problem until a resolution is found.
  • Exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism and ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates a collaborative, supportive approach to work.

Job Details:
  • Title: Director, IT
  • Type: Full-Time
  • Location: Hybrid in NW Washington DC
  • Compensation: $130,000 - $140,000 annually, depending on experience
Physical demands and work environment: 
  • The position will be a hybrid of office/telework with the position based in the Washington, DC headquarters office (no exceptions); regular telework schedule based on organizational policy, need and manager discretion.
  • Must be comfortable with animals, particularly dogs, in the office and at events.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods as well as look at and work from a computer screen for long periods.
  • On occasion, may be required to lift or move equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • May require evening and weekend hours on occasion as needed.
  • Must be comfortable working and navigating across several different time zones- domestic and international.
