American Humane seeks a Development Associate to assist the philanthropic services team with all tasks related to fundraising, particularly those matters related to developing, maintaining and managing prospective donors or partners. This position is based at American Humanes national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Director of Philanthropy

The Development Associate is responsible for supporting the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors in their support of American Humane’s mission and programmatic areas. The Associate works closely with the Director of Philanthropy, the SVP & Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), and other staff to raise money for the purpose of furthering the mission of the organization. The Associate’s responsibilities will continue to develop in line with the team’s growth and needs and would include working closely with senior leadership on special projects, as well as identifying and maximizing opportunities for partnerships with current and potential donors on projects across all program areas. The Development Associate will also be responsible for working on grant reports and new proposals to help secure further meetings and funding for the organization
- Support the development and maintenance of portfolios of major gift, corporate and foundation prospects capable of giving significant contributions to American Humane for gift officers and leadership.
- Help tee up meetings and phone conversations as needed for CEO, CMO and Officer, Philanthropic Services.
- Prepare philanthropic research, including background reports, sector research, and prospect biographies. Facilitate proactive research initiatives as needed.
- Produce high quality proposals, reports and other cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship materials as needed.
- Work with gift officers to develop and maintain an effective moves management strategy for moving prospective and current donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
- Support the entering and tracking of all activities, actions, call reports and deadlines in Raisers Edge Database and other tracking systems.
- Grant writing and proposal writing as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Non-profit experience preferred.
- Demonstrate drive and an ownership mentality.
- Has a self-disciplined, action-oriented style with strong work ethic and ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and high detail orientation.
- Possess a client service attitude, the ability to think on your feet and maintain a good sense of humor.
- Experience identifying and supporting the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of high level donors preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology including applications for project and data management and electronic calendars (Raiser’s Edge, Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred). Ability to quickly learn software specific to the department or institution.
- Strong written (including proof reading and editing) and oral communication skills, including the ability to briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them. Uses appropriate grammar in verbal or written form.
- Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
- Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Self-directed to take action and resolve issues.
- Makes appropriate decisions or choices based on understanding alternative courses of action and potential repercussions.
